Dobson's Choice by Wayne Dobson (Transcribed by Stephen Tucker) Published by DTrik A5, Soft-back, 20 pages, Reviewed by Roy Johnson for Goodliffe's Abracadabra.
Let there be no mistake - this book is brilliant! Its appearance and production is quite staggering for such a slim book. Its multi-colour cover exudes quality and the inclusive photograph of Wayne's smiling face and twinkling eyes create an excitement of expectancy even before the book Is opened! When you do manage to tear yourself away from the cover (back & front!) your expectations will be surpassed because the material detailed inside is superb.
You may now be thinking that Roy Johnson is going 'over the top', but I genuinely believe that to any performer, professional or amateur, this book is (as Ken Brooke would have said) Gold Dust. The 13 tricks are superbly created and honed to perfection by Wayne himself during countless performances; on stage. cabaret, his TV series, TV guest appearances, close-up, lectures and social events.
Wayne's choice of Stephen Tucker to put his thoughts and actions onto paper was truly inspired because each and every one of the 13 items is written with great clarity. Thanks in part to the two-column layout and intriguing balance between black, white and grey printing. The remarkable thing to me Is the total elimination of sleights to achieve the effects, without any loss of effect or entertainment.
Of the 13 Items there are 10 card tricks of Infinite variety, including one feature 'stand up' as used by Wayne over many years at top venues around the world. The three remaining items feature coins, 'objects' and borrowed ring.
One small 'carp' could be the lack of Illustrations, but Stephen's concise and well written explanations leave nothing to the imagination.
Without reservation I heartily recommend this book, not only for the tricks (which work out at £1 each and a steal at this price) but also for the insight to the mind of one of the world's most respected and successful professional performers of our time.
