I don't think this book will be much good for someone beginning in card magic. I'm not sure when the book was originally published, but the foreword indicates it was at a time when "War and Monopoly" were the most modern of all games. A great many of the tricks included are either math-based or involve a "stooge." Even the language used makes it difficult to learn some of the tricks: "The second deceptive shuffle is done by (1) taking from the right hand, the upper half of a pack held in the left. (2) Then move quickly the annular (that is, the finger to the right of the middle finger) finger of the right hand, to allow the cards to slip without mixing their order. Notice: First, that after having moved the cards of a pack with the annular finger of the right hand, it is necessary to place beneath the pack in the right hand a card, and one or two others immediately following it, to make it appear as though some were left underneath. These, however, must be brought back under the package in the left hand. Second, that the package in the left hand, which was in the first instance beneath, and which is actually above, ought to be taken into the right hand to be returned slowly to its first place."
This book is probably only a good purchase for a collector or someone interested in historical aspects of magic. – Jason Cardwell
