The matchbook version of this trick was endorsed and highly recommended by Genii Magazine. This version, performed with a typical box of matchsticks, brings this levitation to additional heights!
The magician displays a box of matches and completely removes the drawer. The spectator is invited to remove two matchsticks from the drawer (or the magician can do it) and hands one to the magician. The magician explains (for example) that wooden matches can magically hold a "charge" similar to electricity.
He demonstrates that the wooden matchstick will readily come in contact with the other matches in the drawer. By simply rubbing the match on his sleeve, (or blowing on it, etc.) he claims that the match is now magically charged and will resist the other matches.
The magician releases his hold on the matchstick above the matchbox drawer with all but one finger touching it, and it remains suspended! The magician explains that, "It seems the matchstick may be attached to my finger - until I pull my finger away," and actions match the words! The matchstick remains suspended and floats above the matchbox! By waving another match under, behind, over and all around the floating matchstick, the magician demonstrates that there can be no possible means of support.
He then plucks the matchstick out of the air, demonstrates again that there can be no possible support by passing the match through the area in which it floated, and if desired he can once again cause the match to float! The matchbox is again reassembled and shown all around. If desired, the matchbox and matches can be handed out for examination.
