How often have you had people ask you to teach them a trick? Many times the people who hire you will request you to teach the audience a simple trick. What to do? You don't want to really expose a good trick but there is a solution: Devin Knight's jumbo backstage monte.
With this platform item, you actually explain the workings behind magic's biggest give-away trick the FLAP 3 CARD MONTE. This trick has been given away by the millions at trade shows. In fact, magicians give it away as party favors, however you will explain this trick and immediately fool the most astute audiences (including magicians) with the lowly 3 Card Monte Flap Trick that almost every kid knows!
The magician has a card selected from a regular deck of cards and asks a spectator to hang onto it for now. Before he finds the selected card, the magician says he will teach the audience how to do a simple trick. In fact it is the first trick he learned as a boy.
To make it easy to see, the performer wil use large jumbo-sized cards. He displays a fan of 3 cards front and back: 2 red sevens and one black seven. The magician places a sticker on the back of the black seven so it will be easy to follow. He turns the backs of the cards toward the audience and removes the newly marked seven and shows it has changed to a Jack! The audience will not be impressed because most of them may know this is the old flap card trick, and even kids will say, "I know that one!"
The performer smiles and agrees but says he will explain it for the benefit of those in the audience who haven't seen it. The magician then shows the red seven and how a partial black seven is taped to the card proper, and that when the Jack is placed behind the flap, it appears to be a black seven when covered by the other red seven.
The magician quickly explains the trick in detail and shows how you can make it at home by taping the flap to the other card. (Keep in mind that throughout the explanatiopn, all the cards are freely displayed both front and back, and the back of the flap is clearly seen.)
After the trick is explained and with the cards still in his hands never having left the audience's sight, the magician shows the Jack behind the flap one last time and comments, "Of course, when you become a professional, you don't need trick cards like this to make a card change; you can do it for real!"
The Jack is now held back towards the audience and the performer then asks the spectator what card they selected earlier. The Jack is then turned over and it has changed to the selected card! This is totally unexpected, and the change of the Jack happens under near-impossible conditions. It will floor any audience including magicians who will wonder how the change was made in plain view!
